Gingivitis – Types, Symptoms, Causes, Treatment & Prevention

What is Gingivitis? Gingivitis is a common and mild form of gum disease (periodontal disease) that causes irritation, redness, and swelling (inflammation) of your gingiva, the part of your gum around the base of your teeth. It’s important to treat gingivitis promptly to prevent more serious gum disease and potential tooth loss.

Types of Gingivitis: Gingivitis can be classified into several types based on its underlying causes and characteristics:

  1. Plaque-induced gingivitis: Caused by the buildup of plaque, a sticky film of bacteria that forms on teeth.
  2. Non-plaque-induced gingivitis: Resulting from factors other than dental plaque, such as hormonal changes, medications, or systemic diseases.

Symptoms of Gingivitis: Gingivitis may present with the following signs and symptoms:

  1. Swollen, tender, or inflamed gums.
  2. Gums that bleed easily, especially during brushing or flossing.
  3. Persistent bad breath (halitosis).
  4. Receding gums, making teeth appear longer.
  5. Formation of pockets between teeth and gums.
  6. Changes in the color of the gums, ranging from pink to dusky red.

Causes and Risk Factors: The primary cause of gingivitis is poor oral hygiene, which allows plaque to accumulate along the gumline. Other factors that may contribute to gingivitis include:

  1. Smoking or tobacco use.
  2. Hormonal changes during pregnancy, menstruation, or menopause.
  3. Diabetes, which can impair the body’s ability to fight infection.
  4. Certain medications that reduce saliva flow or cause gum overgrowth.
  5. Family history of gum disease.
  6. Stress, which can weaken the body’s immune response.

Diagnosis: Gingivitis is typically diagnosed during a dental examination. Your dentist will visually inspect your gums for signs of inflammation and bleeding and may use a probe to measure the depth of spaces (periodontal pockets) between your teeth and gums. Additional tests, such as dental X-rays, may be performed to evaluate the extent of gum disease.

Treatment Options: Treatment for gingivitis focuses on removing plaque and tartar buildup to reverse gum inflammation and prevent progression to more severe forms of gum disease. Treatment options may include:

  1. Professional dental cleaning (scaling and root planing) to remove plaque and tartar from above and below the gumline.
  2. Improved oral hygiene practices, including proper brushing and flossing techniques.
  3. Antimicrobial mouth rinses or prescription oral medications to reduce bacterial growth and inflammation.
  4. Dental procedures to address underlying factors contributing to gingivitis, such as replacing ill-fitting dental restorations or correcting misaligned teeth.
  5. Regular dental checkups and cleanings to monitor gum health and prevent recurrence of gingivitis.

Prevention: Preventing gingivitis involves maintaining good oral hygiene habits and adopting healthy lifestyle practices:

  1. Brush your teeth twice a day with fluoride toothpaste and use dental floss or interdental brushes to clean between teeth.
  2. Use an antiseptic mouthwash to reduce plaque and bacteria in the mouth.
  3. Eat a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, and limit sugary snacks and beverages.
  4. Avoid smoking or using tobacco products, which can increase the risk of gum disease.
  5. Schedule regular dental checkups and cleanings to detect and treat gingivitis early.
